Poker Solvers and GTO: A Guide for Canadian Players

Solvers changed online poker, but most players use them badly. Here is what GTO really means, how Canadians should study with solvers, and when to ignore them.

Walk into any online poker discussion in Canada and you will hear the same three letters within a minute. GTO. Game theory optimal. The phrase has become shorthand for correct play, and solver software has become the default authority that settles arguments. But a great deal of what gets said about solvers is wrong, and a great many players are spending hours with software that is making them worse rather than better.

This guide explains what a solver actually computes, what game theory optimal genuinely means, how to use solver study productively, and — most importantly — when a Canadian player at typical online stakes should deliberately ignore the output.

What GTO actually means

Game theory optimal describes a strategy that cannot be exploited. If you play a perfect GTO strategy, no opponent can adjust to beat you in the long run, no matter what they do. It is a defensive guarantee, not an attacking one.

That last point is where most of the confusion starts. A GTO strategy does not maximise your profit against bad players. It guarantees you cannot be beaten. Against an opponent who folds far too often, GTO leaves money on the table, because the maximally profitable response would be to bluff relentlessly — and that response is itself exploitable if the opponent adjusts.

So GTO is the floor, not the ceiling. It is the strategy you fall back on when you have no reliable information about your opponent, and the baseline you deviate from when you do.

What a solver actually does

A solver takes a defined situation — stack sizes, board texture, starting ranges for both players, bet sizes available — and iterates toward an equilibrium where neither player can improve by changing strategy. It outputs a set of frequencies: bet this hand 68% of the time for this size, check it 32%, fold this one 100%.

Three things follow from this that matter enormously:

  • The output is only as good as the inputs. Feed a solver a preflop range that nobody at your stakes actually plays, and the postflop solution is an answer to a question nobody asked.
  • Solvers assume your opponent also plays the equilibrium. Your actual opponents do not.
  • The frequencies are not memorisable. A full solution contains millions of decision points. Nobody reproduces that at the table.

A solver is a research instrument, not an instruction manual. Used properly it teaches you why certain hands appear in certain ranges. Used improperly it becomes an expensive way to memorise disconnected numbers.

Are solvers allowed at Canadian poker sites?

This is the question that matters before any of the study advice. The near-universal rule at regulated sites serving Canadians is that solvers may be used away from the table, for study, but not during a hand you are actively playing.

Real-time assistance — software that reads your current hand and tells you what to do, whether it is a solver, a pre-computed chart reader, or anything that automates a decision — is prohibited and is treated as a serious offence. Operators detect it through timing analysis, decision-pattern analysis and process monitoring, and penalties typically include confiscation of funds and permanent account closure.

Static charts are a grey area that varies by operator. Some permit basic preflop charts, others prohibit any reference material during play. How to study with a solver properly

If you are going to invest the time, structure it. Here is an approach that produces actual improvement.

Start with your own hands, not random spots

Review sessions you actually played. Find the decisions where you were genuinely uncertain — not the ones where you got unlucky. Run those specific spots. This keeps your study connected to the situations your game actually produces.

Use realistic ranges

The most common solver mistake is inputting theoretically correct ranges when your opponent pool plays nothing like that. If the players at your stakes call three-bets with hands that should fold, your solve should reflect it. Otherwise you are preparing for a game you are not in.

Look for patterns, not frequencies

Do not try to memorise that a specific hand bets 63% of the time. Instead ask why the solver is betting at all on that texture, which hand categories it chooses as bluffs, and how the sizing changes when the board shifts. The patterns transfer to new situations. The individual numbers do not.

Simplify aggressively

Take the solver's mixed strategy and convert it into something you can actually execute. If a hand bets 70% of the time, just bet it. If it bets 20%, check it. The expected value you give up through simplification is tiny compared with the expected value you lose by freezing at the table trying to randomise.

Study one concept at a time

Pick a single theme — defending the big blind against a small open, continuation betting on paired boards, river bluff selection — and work it thoroughly before moving on. Scattered study across twenty concepts produces twenty vague impressions.

When to ignore the solver entirely

Here is the part that rarely gets said clearly: at low and mid stakes online in Canada, exploitative play beats GTO play, and it is not close.

GTO is the correct approach when your opponents are strong, when you have no reads, and when you are playing against people actively trying to exploit you. That describes high stakes and tough tournament final tables. It does not describe most of the games a recreational or semi-serious Canadian player sits in.

Against a typical online pool, the money comes from identifying and attacking specific leaks:

  • Players who call too wide preflop and then fold too often on later streets.
  • Players who never bluff the river — against whom you simply fold everything marginal.
  • Players who bluff far too much — against whom you call much wider than any equilibrium suggests.
  • Players who never defend their blinds — against whom you open relentlessly in position.
  • Players who cannot fold top pair — against whom you value bet thinner and bluff almost never.

None of those adjustments are GTO. All of them make more money than GTO against the player they are aimed at. The solver's value is that it tells you what the unexploitable baseline looks like, so you know exactly how far you are deviating and what risk you are taking by doing so.

The most common solver study mistakes

Studying spots that almost never occur. Deep-stacked four-bet pots on unusual textures are interesting and account for a negligible share of your results. Study the spots that come up every session.

Treating output as gospel across games. A solution for six-max cash at 100 big blinds does not transfer to a tournament at 25 big blinds, or to a nine-handed table, or to a different rake structure.

Ignoring rake. Most solver solutions do not model rake, which meaningfully affects marginal preflop decisions at lower stakes. Hands that are theoretically profitable opens can be losers once the rake is applied.

Studying instead of playing. Volume still matters. A player who studies two hours and plays eight will improve faster than one who studies eight and plays two.

Neglecting the bankroll and the mental side. No amount of theory survives poor game selection, tilt, or playing stakes you cannot afford. Those remain the biggest leaks in most players' games by a wide margin.

A realistic study plan

For a Canadian player at low to mid stakes, a sensible balance looks something like this. Spend most of your off-table time reviewing your own hands and building reads on your regular opponents. Spend a smaller, focused portion on solver work targeting one concept at a time. Prioritise preflop ranges and common postflop spots over exotic scenarios. And spend at least as much time on game selection as on strategy, because the softest table beats the sharpest theory.

Solvers are an extraordinary tool and they have genuinely raised the standard of play across the online game. But they answer a specific question — how do I play so that I cannot be exploited — and that is usually not the question a winning player at typical stakes should be asking. Learn what the equilibrium looks like so you understand the structure of the game. Then deviate from it deliberately, based on what your opponents are actually doing. Use solvers away from the table only, check your operator's rules before using any software at all, and never let theory study crowd out the two things that decide most results: volume and game selection.
